37.
When I was in high school, I used to write up a list of things that were going on in my life on my birthday, along with my favorite things at the time, friends, etc. I've decided to start doing it again, as I haven't for at least 17 years or so. I recently discovered one such list in the garage in an old shoe box that I've been keeping old notes and such in. It's a little frightening, as many of the same things I was dealing with as a 21-year old are the same things I'm dealing with now. Have I grown at all??? It's a little disheartening.

April 16, 2007, 37 years old.

Favorite Bands: The Wood Brothers, Morphine, Kasabian, Alejandro Escovedo, Malcolm Middleton, Concrete Blonde (old stuff), Mute Math.

Favorite Clothes: jeans, black short-sleeved v-neck jonny collar shirt, wicked socks, black Keens, black leather jacket.

Favorite Foods: Indian food, Thai food, marinated flank steak (I have the BEST recipe!), peanut butter cups, grapefruit.

Currently Reading: erotic horror short story compilations, e.e. cummings, other poetry.

Movie Last Seen in the Theater: Meet the Robinsons

Favorite Do-ings:

You know what? It doesn't matter. Nothing really changes. The core of who I am is no different now after 16 years--I've just learned to deal with it a little bit better.

I'm in a bit of a funk today.

Nin.
I just came across this poem, and I thought I would share:

Risk
by: Anais Nin

And then the day came,
when the risk
to remain tight
in a bud
was more painful
than the risk
it took
to Blossom.

Secretary.
I finally got to see Secretary a couple of nights ago, and I must say, that was REALLY good. Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader were incredible in their roles, and I really like how their relationship changes over the course of the movie. Their interpersonal dynamic was entirely credible to me. And I will never look at a red Sharpie the same way again!

I found the soundtrack to be wonderful, too. Not overwhelming--perfectly supportive.

Yippie!
I'm so excited! I submitted a story and a couple of poems to Literotica.com, and they were approved and posted!!! Without any requests from an editor for changes! Yippie! If you're interested, they are under the i.d. catherinewheel, and the story is called Round One. 3rr has already read the story, and it was partly his reaction that encouraged me to submit it. Yay!

Sling.
So, we're on week 2 with the sling for the right arm. It is not fun. It's actually worse than the cast was, because you can still easily screw up your arm while it's in a sling. Casts are armor protection. It's also much more tempting to do things you're not supposed to when it's just a sling. Two and a half more weeks. Crikey.

The bait
was not taken! Though I slept little, my brain imagining ghost bites and crawling critters, I stayed in our bed all night and was NOT bitten! Fair readers, the battle may finally be won. Let's hope there's no resurgence. I'd forgotten how good that mattress feels...

I Hestitate to Say This,
but it would seem, fair readers, that the creeping crawling doom may have finally been vanquished! The Amazing Pete braved the bed last night and emerged unscathed. I will join him tonight to see if I am more tantalizing bait. Let's hope not...

The Bed,
she is back in the bedroom from her extended stay on the back deck. Tonight, the Amazing Pete will once again sacrifice his body with the hope that it will emerge from a night's sleep unmolested by crawling doom. Will he be victorious? Will his valor be rewarded with no need for an additional ding to our credit card for a new bedroom set? Stay tuned, fair readers...

Could be...
that the bugs are not in our bedroom anymore. Pete sacrificed himself to the room last night, sleeping on a pile of comforters, to see if the bugs are in the room somewhere. It would seem not. The plan now is to move the furniture back inside from the back deck with the hope that the bugs have frozen to death. Seeing as how the furniture has been out there for almost two weeks now, I do have some hope. It would be very nice to be able to reclaim the room for the forces of good without having to spend a lot more money. Keep those fingers crossed!

Wiiiihoooo!
The Wii arrived yesterday, and Pete and I played tennis, baseball, bowled, boxed, and golfed our way into sore arms and shoulders. For the record, Pete is a much better tennis player than I am, but I think I may end up being a better boxer. Baseball was probably a wash, ultimately. We played a game after training, and while I won, he did much better in the training sessions than I did. Playing with the Wii is a lot of fun, and actually a decent way to get your heart rate going! Now if only they'd make Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii...

We also have Madden 07 and Zelda, but we haven't looked at those yet.

Yesterday, I was able to procure the elusive Nintendo Wii from Circuit City online! I'm looking forward to watching Pete do funny dances and moves with his tongue sticking out with concentration.

That was fun. Some of those are strangely apropos and almost creepy. I love random meaning.
I would definitely like some Jack Johnson played at my funeral. He's so sweet and mellow and ultimately both cosmic and earthy at the same time.

If you haven't heard Pink Martini's version of "Que Sera Sera," you should give it a listen--creepy.

Miscellany.
1. Shoulder surgery is scheduled for January 29th, so if you need me to do anything with my right arm, or need to do anything TO my right arm, it needs to be soon. :)

2. We bought a TiVO 3 unit. We couldn't take the crappy Cox DVR anymore. Woohoo!

3. Cho's Garden in Fairfax makes wonderful Korean food and sushi. Highly recommend going there.

4. We will finally be having sub-50 degree weather, which means the bed and its associated furniture will be going out on the deck with the hope that the cold weather will FINALLY kill the bat bugs. I'm skeptical. The next step, should it not work, will be to buy a whole new bedroom set. Oy.

Shoulder.
It turns out that I have a shoulder joint tear and a ganglion cyst due to the tear. My doctor is having me see another doctor in his practice who specializes in shoulders to confirm his findings. At this point, it looks like I'll be having surgery to fix the tear, remove the cyst, and strengthen the joint. This means that my right arm will be in a sling for 3-4 weeks, and then will undergo a lot of therapy. I'm glad that I'm finally getting something done about this, but I don't know what I'll do without my right arm. It was different when the left arm was cast-bound for so long--I've never used the left arm as much. It will be a challenge. Unfortunately, I think this puts the kibosh on another mini-tri in March, and probably the one I was hoping to do in August. Pleh.
